JANET BURTON, C.P.A. Manager, Tax Services Group

A unique mix of talent and experience distinguishes Manager Janet Burton among accounting professionals. She brings to client relationships solid technical experience in the tax and estate planning areas and consulting skills honed early in her career as an educational advisor.

"People often associate accounting with a strong focus on details, but you have to move beyond the details, gain a thorough overview of each client's situation to anticipate their needs, identify potential problems and generate effective solutions," Burton says.

Burton is a self described "tax generalist," providing tax consulting for middle market entrepreneurial companies and their owners. She takes a proactive approach to tax consulting, advising clients on constant tax law changes, and providing frequent tips on tax opportunities that may benefit client situations. "In tax and estate planning, there is a vast amount of information that needs to be communicated to clients to ensure their best interests are served," Burton says. "We work with clients in a proactive mode to help them capitalize on all available opportunities."

Burton also brings strong problem solving skills to the table, as she is also called in to counsel families coping with the personal loss of a loved one compounded by financial crises ensuing from inadequate estate planning.

With a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from the University of Illinois, Chicago, she started her career as a student advisor at U of I in the early 1970's. When her job description expanded to include budgeting assignments, Burton discovered her niche. She returned to the classroom, completing a range of courses in the accounting and tax areas at DePaul University and U of I.

In 1981, Burton achieved her public accounting certification and embarked on a new career at a small Chicago public accounting firm. She moved to a larger firm in Oakbrook in the mid 1980's. In 1991, she put her tax expertise to work for a loop law firm, where she gained valuable perspective on tax accounting from the private side of the industry. Burton returned to public accounting in 1993, serving as a tax specialist in a Wheaton-based firm for more than five years. She joined Nykiel Carlin in 1998, drawn to the firm by its "dynamic atmosphere and the opportunity to contribute as part of a team."
