Military service in the U.S. Air Force included a tour in Viet Nam, where he was decorated with the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action. While teaching jet engine mechanics at the end of his tour, he worked with a team of field experienced, non-commissioned officers to rewrite the technical school curriculum for gas turbine and turbofan jet engines. Strong analytical and negotiating skills led Jim through a career with domestic and international firms in start-ups, new strategic opportunities and market expansions in the consumer electronics and telecommunications industries. As President and CEO of VHF, Inc., a Midwest-based consumer electronics retail operation, Jim re-engineered operations, increased profitability and opened new retail locations. He increased retail sales by a factor of five over a three year period, then negotiated and closed the sale of the company. After selling the firm, he entered the telecommunications industry with ROLM Corporation in positions beginning in sales and rising through regional sales and operations management, consistently the top performer. From there, Jim accepted a position as Vice President of Marketing with Teleco USA, Inc., a start-up interconnect telephone company formed by two small companies in South Carolina and Texas.
