Lieutenant General Sir Edmund Burton completed a 3 year appointment as Executive Chairman of the Police Information Technology Organisation (PITO) in December 2003. He retired from the Army in April 2000, on completion of over 38 years' service. His final appointment was Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Systems) in the Ministry of Defence. In that post, he led a Joint Service and Civil Service team in developing a new approach to defence equipment capability - in particular, the establishment of the Central Customer and a Joint Service approach to the integration of information across the battlespace. He was also responsible for the Applied Research Programme.
In his role as Chairman of PITO, he established a Central Customer for strategic police IT and communications equipment capabilities within the organization, which provides procurement and in service support for strategic programmes, such as the Police National Computer, National Fingerprint System, the Criminal Justice Extranet (CJX), and the Airwave secure national communications system. Having completed that three year appointment, he is now undertaking further work with the Cabinet Office, addressing the implementation of the Government Information Assurance Strategy: this initiative, which is engaging the Senior Information Risk Owners across government departments, constitutes a major change activity.
His previous appointments included Commandant of the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham and Military Attache in the British Embassy, Washington DC. He has been a member of the Defence Science Advisory Committee and of the Defence and Aerospace Panel of the Technology Foresight Programme.
Sir Edmund's particular interest is in the professional development for leaders facing the challenge of working in an uncertain and changing environment. He is a visiting professor at Cranfield University, a fellow of the IEE, and runs a small charity. -
