Well, John's father was Ed Burton, Chief Design Engineer for Douglas Aircraft and basic designer of the DC-3, 4, 5, 6 and 8, the SBD Dauntless and the D-558-2, so airplanes and aviators were our natural habitat and why we hung out at the Burton home over on Bundy Drive. -

During 1960/61 a series of discussions were conducted with Ed Burton , Vice-President of engineering at Douglas , leading ultimately to the creation of the rear engined DC-9. A letter of intent was signed by Collett Everman Woolman of Delta Air Lines on March 13 , 1963 , to purchase fifteen DC-9s at a unit price slightly in excess of 3 million. Douglas failed in attempt to secure an order from American Airlines , but decided to go into production. The Delta offer was accepted on April 16 , 1963. On January 12 , 1965 , the first DC-9 was rolled out at Long Beach and on February 25 , 1965 , a month ahead of schedule , aircraft N9DC , c/n 45696 , f/n 1 took off on its initial test flight. There were five aircraft used in the flight test program , flown by twelve pilots. On September 8 , 1965 , Delta Airlines accepted the first DC-9 from Douglas.
