David Burton ...Short Tribute
It was with sadness, yet celebration of his life, that the village said Goodbye to David Burton, just before Christmas.David's wish was to live out his retirement in Lympstone and, at 93, he almost did that.
He retired from the Crown Agents in London and settled here in 1973.He was keen to become an active member of the community and the list of his contributions is long.He served on the Parish Council for 14 years (Chair for 2 years); he was a member of the Lympstone Society (incl. treasurer, vice-chair) until he reached 83; he ran the Lympstone Singers; he gave illustrated talks about Dartmoor or local Flora and Fauna; he was a Bell-ringer for 26 years; in the 1980's he led the Girl Guides on many10 mile Dartmoor Treks and he ran the school Chess Club, and more ...
He also had a talent for photography and he has left a photographic history of village events and people, over 3 decades, to the Lympstone Society.
He was most widely known as original Editor of the Lympstone Herald ...Tippex so it took him 3 days a month ...served the community in so many ways.
In his personal autobiography he wrote "moving to Devon proved to be one of the happiest decisions of my life".He will be missed greatly.
