On Thursday, NCGOP Executive Committee member David Burton issued an e-mail to the officers within the Duke College Republicans. In it he chastised the group for "promoting the candidacy of Rachel Lea Hunter for NC Supreme Court, and identifying her as a "good conservative," while giving no mention at all to the candidate who earned the endorsement of the NC Republican Party..."
...
Hunter commented, "I am not surprised to see 'Barbarian Dave' (David Burton) continue his relentless and brutal attacks against my campaign and my person.
...
On September 23, 2004, the Duke College Republicans were bombarded with offensive e-mails from NCGOP Executive Committee Member Dave Burton.
...
Burton copied his e-mail to everyone from U.S.
...
DCR Policy Advisor John T. Plecnik informed Burton that any conservative candidate can appear on the site, provided that they forward a personal e-mail requesting the favor.
...
In addition, the webpage in question made two statements that Burton largely chose to ignore: ,The following candidates have not been endorsed by the Duke College Republicans., In addition, the bottom of the site provided the general policy for candidate postings: ,If you are a conservative running for office in North Carolina and wish to be featured in 'Candidates,' then please forward your request., A convenient hyperlink was provided in the above statement.
Burton replied in irate fashion, stating that College Republicans should not base their support on candidates actually taking the time to ask for it.He also disparaged Rachel,s education and qualifications to serve.
Shockingly, Bill Peaslee, NCGOP Chief of Staff/Special Legal Counsel, replied to Burton,s copy.
...
DCR Vice Co-Chairman Steven Danforth rebutted Burton,s arguments in a direct e-mail.
...
Thanks to Burton, half the state already has this communiqué.I feel that all loyal Republicans deserve to read it, as well.

Mr. Burton.
...
I ask you, Mr. Burton, where did you go to school?
...
What I do know, Mr. Burton, is that Ms. Hunter worked to achieve a level of education much greater than that of the MAJORITY of Americans (according to the 2000 Census, 69.3% of US citizens have no college degree).
...
Your attack upon her college background reflects poorly upon not only you, Mr. Burton, but the North Carolina GOP Executive Committee and our Republican Party as well.
...
I have heard you speak, Mr. Burton, and have been unimpressed.
...
In short I did not mean to hit "reply all" but only to reply to my friend David Burton when I wrote "well put".
...
Michael McKnight, former State Chair of the NC Federation of CRs assured me that Burton is not an agent of the Paul Newby for NC SC campaign.
...
I can only conclude that Burton intended to convince him that I, former Myrick intern, was misbehaving.
If I were Newby, I would seriously consider asking Burton to resign from the Party executive committee.
