    Blount County Emergency Communications dispatcher David Burton figures he's had a pretty good week -- a new baby born last Thursday and recognition as Telecommunicator of the Year this Thursday.

    Burton received the special honor during a luncheon held at the communications center marking National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.The award was presented Thursday by 2002 Blount County Telecommunicator of the Year Mark "Bubba " Ownsby.

    Blount County 911 Center Director Jeff Caylor said Burton had distinguished himself not only as a dispatcher but as someone active with other public safety agencies.

    In addition to his work as a dispatcher, Burton is an EMT (emergency medical technician) with Rural/Metro Ambulance Service and a reserve firefighter with both the Alcoa and Maryville fire departments.

    Burton has been an emergency communications dispatcher for six years.He said he got into radio when he was only 18, working at Maryville radio station WGAP, then at WRJZ in Knoxville.

    He later went to work at University of Tennessee Medical Center and found he was also interested in emergency medical service.He said he realized he could combine the two areas as an emergency dispatcher.

    He said he's not the only member of his family interested in public safety.His brother is Lt.
