Mr Leathersich said that while the scope of the study had not yet been finalised it would be undertaken by Chris Burton, the director and founder of Western Whale Research.

Mr Burton, who is based in Busselton, is one of the very few cetacean (marine mammals such as whales, dolphins, sea lions and the like) experts living in Western Australia.
It was expected that the study would run for at least a year with Dr Burton keen to get as much assistance as possible from members of the local communities who would be invaluable in providing photographs and observations.
Dr Burton was already part of the desalination project having been contracted to provide advice on management strategies being prepared to avoid any impacts on migrating whales in particular.
