TAYLORS, S.C., Mar. 4, 2003 - Bill Burton, owner and chief executive officer of Cafe Enterprises Inc., has been named 2003 Restaurateur of the Year by the Hospitality Association of South Carolina.Cafe Enterprises owns and operates 18 Fatz Cafe restaurants in the Carolinas, along with two J.Jr's Filling Station and Grill locations in Greenville and Spartanburg.
The award continues the Hospitality Association's 50-plus-year tradition of recognizing a restaurateur who not only excels in the hospitality industry, but is involved in a number of industry and community activities.
"I am honored to be recognized as the South Carolina Restaurateur of the Year," stated Burton."I've been in the restaurant industry for more than two decades and have always believed the key to success is good food and good service - service not only in our restaurants, but also in the communities we serve."
Burton began his restaurant career as a dishwasher while attending Clemson University.Upon graduation in 1977, he joined Quincy's Family Steakhouse as a management trainee.Spartan Food Systems Inc., which at the time was Hardee's largest franchisee, acquired the seven-unit Quincy's chain the following year.After serving in various management positions, in 1986 Burton was named director of operations for Quincy's, which had grown to 215 restaurants.In 1991 he was named president and chief operating officer of Quincy's and senior vice president of TW Services Inc., the successor to Spartan Foods and the third-largest foodservice company in the nation at that time.
He left TW Services after the company went through a leveraged buyout, and in 1993 purchased half of Cafe Enterprises.In January 1999, Burton acquired the balance of the company from its founder, James B. Rogers.

Burton serves on the Board of Directors of MountainBank in Hendersonville, N.C.; EarthFare, a growing chain of natural foods supermarkets based in Asheville, N.C.; and the Clemson University Tiger Lettermen Association.His affiliation with Clemson was the foundation for the company's commitment to education.Cafe Enterprises partners with elementary, middle and high schools to promote and encourage academic and athletic achievement, and it actively supports universities and colleges in the markets in which it operates.
A native of Clemson, Burton resides in Spartanburg and is active with the Coalition to Repeal Minibottles, a statewide organization promoting legislation to modernize South Carolina's on-premise alcohol beverage laws.
