New Partner Strengthens Firm's Global Projects Group
HOUSTON , January 17, 2005 -- Bill Burton, who coordinated energy policy as deputy assistant to President Clinton in the early 1990s, has joined Baker Botts L.L.P. as a partner in the Global Projects Group and as a member of the Energy Regulatory practice group.
Burton , 48, is based in the firm's Austin , Texas office. He moved to Baker Botts from Jones Day, where he headed that firm's energy industry practice. Burton coordinated energy policy for Clinton 's initial run for the presidency in 1991-92, and did the same in the White House where he also served as policy and staff director for Clinton 's first chief of staff Mack McLarty.
"Bill Burton has extensive energy industry-related legal experience that will complement our outstanding group of lawyers in this field," said Walt Smith, managing partner of Baker Botts.

Burton serves on the board of the Institute for Energy Law of the Center for American and International Law, and on the board of a private research group affiliated with the Energy Council, which is a group of legislators from domestic producing states as well as representatives from Venezuela and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Newfoundland .
He served five terms on the National Petroleum Council, appointed by the Secretary of Energy. By appointment of the president and confirmation by the U.S. Senate, he also served two terms on the board of directors of the U.S. Enrichment Corp., helping privatize the nation's only commercial nuclear enrichment company.
"My goal by working out of Austin is to help extend Baker Botts' reputation as the world's preeminent law firm for energy companies," Burton said.
