Burton is one of six sales representatives for Accent Draperies that designs, fabricates, and installs window treatments for settings varying from the tailored richness of the executive suite to the practical durability of a hospital room.
Over the years, Accent Draperies has completed thousands of commercial jobs throughout the country, ranging from office buildings, restaurants, and banks to health care facilities and retirement homes.
Current major clients include Invacare Continuing Care Group of St. Louis, a company that offers turnkey services nationwide to the long-term care market and is currently extremely active in Florida; JMM Architects, which specializes in long-term healthcare facilities throughout the mid-west; Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Huntington National Bank, and The Ohio State University.
Before joining the company, Burton wore several hats at the same time. She operated her own business, Creative Design Consulting, for 19 years, and was a client of Accent Draperies. For eight years during this time, Burton was also an independent art contractor, drawing from the resources of companies in Washington, Wisconsin, and Ohio.
And, for five years Burton owned and operated a third venture, Vestments, where she designed and created specialty items such as vests, purses, and pillows from an extensive collection of vintage fabrics, and buttons she obtained through stores, antique shops, and other outlets. She closed this operation in 2000 because she found it "too time consuming" to continue.
Accent's far-flung appeal keeps Burton on the go, traveling where needed to present the company's recommendations for window blinds and shades, draperies and valances as well as bedspreads and privacy drapes for the health care facilities. It is also on these trips where Burton's interior designer expertise occasionally comes into play.
"I love my job," she says.
