    Tom Burt is corporate vice president and deputy general counsel for litigation in Microsoft Corp.'s Law and Corporate Affairs Department.He manages all of the company's U.S. litigation issues, coordinates international cases and directs the work of outside law firms retained by Microsoft to represent it in lawsuits.

    Burt has built a strong internal Litigation Group, participated in negotiating a settlement of antitrust litigation with the U.S. Department of Justice, led the successful defense against additional antitrust remedies proposed by nine U.S. states, and represented Microsoft in a number of patent cases.

    Burt joined Microsoft in October 1995 and has since held several legal positions within the company.Before working at Microsoft, Burt handled intellectual property litigation and other commercial and environmental lawsuits for the Seattle-based law firm Riddell, Williams, Bullitt & Walkinshaw for 16 years.He served as a law clerk to Judge Ozell M. Trask on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

    Burt has a bachelor's degree in human biology from Stanford University and a law degree with honors from the University of Washington Law School.

    Burt lives on Bainbridge Island, Wash., with his wife, Ann.The couple has three children.Away from work, Burt enjoys racing sports cars, skiing, boating, hiking, reading and spending time with his family.
