John Burt, who graduated from Lincoln Pius X in 1994, is bringing his Shreveport, La., boys' basketball team to Lincoln to play in the holiday basketball tournament Dec. 27-29 at Lincoln High.
    ...
I do have a little drawl and y'all is a regular part of my vocabulary," admitted Burt. "Occasionally, I find myself saying 'fixin' to.' It becomes somewhat automatic down here. If you say 'you guys' to the kids, they snicker, so I immediately added y'all."

Burt teaches religion and English at Loyola College Prep and took over the basketball coaching job three years ago after one year as an assistant.
    ...
Loyola College Prep has just over 400 students, but Burt said his team is accustomed to playing teams from much larger schools.

"We're not uncomfortable coming to play these larger schools. We've already played five games against schools with enrollment 1,500 to 2,500," he said. "We're the only private school in our district. Down here, the classifications are a lot different. There's 5A all the way down to B and C. The B and C schools would be about the size of Class D-2 schools in Nebraska. Since they don't have six-man or eight-man football, those schools play only basketball and they play about 50 or 60 games. Last year, probably the best team in the state was Class B. They came into a tournament and just beat up on the big schools."

    ...
Burt said adjusting to the different style and level of play in Louisiana was quite an adjustment.

"I was amaze at the prevalence of high school recruiting down here. When I took over, I said I was not going to recruit, but instead build this program through basketball fundamentals," he said. "We're still trying to come together as a team, but we've made good strides. I think the tournament will be good for us.

"It's a whole different game down here. I had to adjust as a coach to the athletic level of play."

    ...
The team is led by Tim Horton, a 6-foot-3 forward who has been with the varsity program all four years Burt has been at the school, and Michael Mackey, a three-year starter.
    ...
He's a Boys' State representative and just a great kid," said Burt.
