Professor Burt Fairmoor man is new Dean FAIRMOOR resident Professor Alastair Burt has been appointed Dean of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He joined the University in 1989 as a Senior Lecturer and was later promoted to a personal Chair in 1995, becoming Professor of Pathology in 1998.
He has previously been Postgraduate Sub-Dean of Medicine and more recently Head of the School of Clinical and Laboratory Sciences. He has also been Head of the Clinical Services for Cellular Pathology in the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust for the past five years.
He has a strong research interest in liver disease and has been editor of both a major international journal and the leading textbook on liver pathology. In his new position, he will play a key role in enhancing the links between the University and its NHS partners around the region.
Prof Burt, 48, said: "This is an exciting challenge; in the North East we already have one of the best Medical Schools in the country and some of the most successful NHS Trusts and it is a great honour to have been given the opportunity to help build on these strengths."
