Bursztyn welcomes the caution the premier is showing
Laurentian University science professor Peter Bursztyn says Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is right to have sober second thoughts on ethanol.
It's provincial government policy to require any fuels sold in the province contain five - per-cent ethanol; by 2010, the government was requiring that rise to 10-per-cent ethanol.
On Wednesday, McGuinty said he's considering putting that plan in park.
"It was always a stupid idea because (ethanol) is not a particularly wonderful fuel.Because it's produced from corn, it probably doesn't save any greenhouse gases," said Bursztyn, who also is an industrial consultant chemist.
The fossil fuels required to produce ethanol - from plowing the field to fertilizing and harvesting the corn crop, to transporting it to the ethanol refinery and then to market - equal the amount of fossil fuel that would be saved as it's burned up in Ontario vehicles, he explained.

Increasing the proportion of ethanol in gasoline, therefore, especially in an urban environment, is counterproductive, Bursztyn argued, adding the demand for corn for ethanol production is driving up food prices - especially as poultry, beef and pork farmers use corn for feed.
Add to that rising corn, rice and wheat prices, and the price of staple foods round the world continue to rise, he noted.
