Nancy R. Burstein, Ph.D.
In her 23 years at Abt Associates, Nancy Burstein has directed and conducted analyses on dozens of projects, primarily in the fields of income security and nutrition assistance, but also in childcare and long-term care for the elderly.She serves as technical reviewer on projects throughout the company and has presented her views on "Selection Bias in Policy Research: Analytic Approaches" and "Programmers and Analysts: The Yin and Yang of Policy Research" in company-wide forums.
Dr. Burstein's current projects include a research grant on the relationship between maternal employment and child-nutrition outcomes, an investigation of the impact of local food stamp office policies and practices on Food Stamp Program participation since the implementation of welfare reform, and a literature review of the economic determinants of marital and cohabitational union formation and dissolution among disadvantaged Americans.
Dr. Burstein has presented results of her work to various groups, including the American Public Welfare Association, the American Statistical Association, the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management, and the National Child Support Enforcement Association.In 2001, she spoke at the National WIC Association's Washington Leadership Conference on "The Future of WIC [The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children]."
Well known throughout Abt Associates, Dr. Burstein recently was elected to the Employee Advisory Council, a group that serves as a communication link between employees and senior corporate management, representing employee perspectives on key issues.In addition, for nearly 20 years Dr. Burstein has co-organized the annual "Chocolate Party" in Abt Associates' Cambridge office and has served as coordinator of the Chocolateers, the Company's distinguished a cappella singing group.
Dr. Burstein holds a S.B. degree in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a M.Sc. in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the the London School of Economics, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University.She has been an Abt Associates Fellow since 1999.
