Rosanne Burson, Nurse Practitioner and Diabetes Educator opened up a unique counseling practice in September of 2001.
...
Before opening her business, Rosanne was working at St. John Hospital & Medical Center, Detroit, Michigan. She initiated the Diabetes Center and was the Diabetes Self Management Education Program Coordinator for all four of St. John's sites.
What inspired Rosanne to develop her practice in diabetes care?
...
It was at the VA Medical Center that Rosanne developed and implemented an American Diabetes Association recognized program that resulted in a nationwide database available in the VA system in 1996.
In her current business, Diabetes Partner, the main clients include Primarily Type 2 adults, some younger Type 1 adults and many patients with metabolic syndrome. "I think each case is unique and that's what keeps me interested. Their stories are different and what makes them tick is different," states Rosanne.
Diabetes Partner's main referring providers include Internal Medicine physicians, nurse practitioners and some endocrinologists. Some patients are self-referred as they usually walk in or find us on the Internet. Rosanne markets her and Patricia's services by intermittent mailings of brochures or tagging along with drug reps to office lunches to describe my services. If a patient is self-referred to Diabetes Partner, Rosanne uses the opportunity to send brochures and a referral pack with her patient progress letter back to the patient's physician or nurse practitioner.
"I am beginning to focus on people with diabetes. I continue to show up at Expos and community events. I am planning some local newspaper marketing and have asked a local college group that is studying marketing to consider working with me," describes Rosanne.
In addition to her practice, Roseanne was the Chair of Advanced Practice Nurse SPG of AADE 2001-2002, is currently Chair of the MODE Diabetes in School Task Force that received a grant to present workshops, develop and distribute a manual and complete research based on improvement of the school environment for students/families and has a publication under her belt entitled, The Advanced Practice Diabetes Educator. (2002). The Diabetes Educator. Pp 182-184. Volume 28, #2. March/April 2002.
Rosanne admits that, "My greatest business challenges are that not all insurance companies cover nurse practitioners.

As for her unique partnership with a registered dietitian, Rosanne adds that, "We in diabetes have always worked in multidisciplinary teams.
