Heine's sister, Christy, 19, also a BCCC student, was nervous about the cold weather overnight, but said she hoped to have the strength to remain, especially since she knew her car was parked a short walk away, and her house was certainly warmer than a box.
"I have given money to places, but I've never done anything - I think it will make me feel different," Christy said."When I give money away, I don't feel like I'm giving any of myself away."
Human Rights Club adviser and English professor Chris Bursk anticipated about 15 people would sleep out each night. The weeklong campaign, culminating with a Friday night concert, was expected to raise a couple of thousand dollars for the American Red Cross Homeless Shelter in Bristol Township, the county's only emergency shelter.Money also would be given to A Woman's Place, the county's domestic violence shelter and program, and Libertae, a Bensalem halfway house for women recovering from substance abuse.
Bursk called the box village a small, symbolic act to remind people that homelessness and poverty remain concerns, even in affluent suburbs like Bucks County.
"Each time we've done it, the box villagers felt a little what it's like to be homeless and the humbleness," he added.
