   That will change today, when mall owner Adam Bersin, president of Bersin Properties LLC, holds the grand opening for Medley Kids, a garden-themed $500,000 indoor children's playground that features colorful soft-sculpture ladybugs, button mushrooms, a snaking water hose and faucet slide, a 20-foot lilac tree dotted with fireflies and a wall full of activity boards for little ones.
   
   Bersin pointed to the soft benches that ring the 2,000-square-foot play area.
   
   "Children can come in here, take off their shoes and play while parents can sit here and watch," he said.

   Bersin said the new play area is just part of his plan to remake the former Irondequoit Mall into a thriving, family-centered retail center.
   
   "But so far, the mall is only about 2 percent of where we want to take it," he said.
   
   Bersin purchased the property earlier this year and secured a long-term tax abatement deal with Monroe County, the town of Irondequoit and the East Irondequoit Central Schools. Since then, he has brought in the mall's first major retailer in years, Steve and Barry's University Sportswear, which opened last month. Later this month, Brazilian perfume retailer O Boticario will open on the mall's second floor. Numerous smaller stores have opened in the past few months, and Bersin said he expects ground-breaking within weeks for a 127,000-square-foot Target store, slated to open by next fall.
