Born in Boston, Mr. Burrows grew up in Mattapan and Marshfield and graduated from Boston College High School in 1952. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Stonehill College.

After working in sales for many years with IBM, Mr. Burrows began his own Milton-based business, Data Consultants, Inc., in 1965.

Business travel regularly took Mr. Burrows to Switzerland, Italy, and France, which gave him the opportunity to explore the Alps, mostly on downhill skis. After his 1995 retirement, Mr. Burrows moved to Vail and continued to enjoy expeditions around the world in pursuit of adventure, especially on the mountains and the high seas.

"My brother Joe had a unique sense of humor and was very much an outdoors, adventurous man," his brother John said yesterday. "He was a great offshore captain with many years of sea experience."

Mr. Burrows was a volunteer ambassador for Vail Mountain and a member of the Cordillera Golf Club in Vail. He was also active in the Nantucket Anglers' Club and entered tournaments with his 48-foot sportfishing boat he named "Alpen Glo."

In addition to his brother John, of Ashland, Mr. Burrows leaves his wife, Patricia (Flaherty); five nieces; and three nephews.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in North Quincy. Burial will be in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.
