Anzac Avenue Fire Station first officer John Burrows said the value of the grain in the silo was about $9000, but it was the potential for a massive explosion that had every8one worried.

"I ordered an immediate evacuation area of 100 metres around the silo because grain dust is very, very explosive," Mr Burrows said.

"You don't mess around with grain fires.

"One kilogram of grain dust is as explosive as one kilogram of dynamite."

Mr Burrows said crews initially looked at the option of filling the silo with dry nitrogen gas to extinguish the fire.

"We ended up using the telescopic aerial appliance to get up close to the top and then used thermal imaging cameras and a covert snake-eye camera to see the fire," he said.

"By that time the fire had burnt itself out."

Mr Burrows said it wasn't clear how much grain was lost in the blaze.

He said it was a very co-operative exercise, but didn't want to acknowledge there might have been a bit of luck on their side.

"We don't like to call it luck.

"But it's safe to say everyone prevented what could quite easily have been a very explosive situation," he said.
