"The festival started in the late '50s and by 1964, it became an annual event," says David Burrows, president of the Sebewaing Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event. A fun-filled lineup includes a carnival midway, live music beneath a tent, a main stage with more entertainment, a sugar queen crowning, helicopter rides, bake-offs, magicians, street vendors and more. "And we'll have lots of food," Burrows says. "This is a unique festival, as there are no corporate sponsors, so it's an old-fashioned atmosphere and there's something for everyone." To help celebrate the sugar beet, festival visitors can find their own beat, tonight at 9 when Jozy Wailz plays rock 'n' roll from the '60s, '70s and '80s.
