Dave Burrows has worked at the York museum since it opened in 1975 and yesterday was his last day as workshop manager. Over the last three decades he has ensured the smooth running of the museum's locomotives, including the fully-operational replica of the Rocket, George Stephenson's engine which pulled the world's first passenger train between Liverpool and Manchester in 1830. Mr Burrows took special care of the replica during its tour of Australia in 1982. After completing his engineering apprenticeship in 1967, Mr Burrows worked at the Science Museum in London before coming to the museum in 1975, where he has run the workshop ever since. He and his team have maintained and repaired exhibits in full view of the hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to the museum each year. Mr Burrows has played an important part in developing a "workshop notebook", a multimedia project recording conservation and restoration projects in words and pictures. The workshop notebook chronicles the conditions of old components, which are usually illustrated against the new replacements, with in-depth written records detailing the work necessary to complete the restoration. Museum head Andrew Scott said Mr Burrows had had a hand in every major project in the museum's workshop during his long career.

"The contribution Dave has made to the heritage technology here at the NRM is immense. But equally remarkable is his talent for keeping out of the limelight. "Dave is one of a kind, and his experience, skill and creativity will be sorely missed," Mr Scott added.
