Diana M. Ingraham, Board of Education Chair, announces that Voluntown Board of Education unanimously voted at the February 9 th meeting to appoint Adam S. Burrows as the part-time Superintendent of Schools.
    ...
Burrows, a resident of Old Lyme, retired this past June after 38 years experience in education in Connecticut. He served as Principal of Center School in Old Lyme for the past twenty years. He was also designated by the Board of Education to serve as "Acting Superintendent" in the absence of the Superintendent. He served as Acting Superintendent in Old Lyme for a period of over two months several years ago, and again the following year for a month.

Burrows participated in the recent building project to renovate Mile Creek, Lyme, Middle, and Center Schools by serving as the administrative representative on the building committee.

Burrows was the original co-chairperson of the district Technology Committee that drafted a technology plan and created a curriculum format. The committee also received a $160,000 state grant, which was used to wire the network of the Lyme-Old Lyme High School. Burrows was an active member of the Lyme-Old Lyme Administrators Association and over the years has served as President, Chief Negotiator, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Burrows completed his superintendent certification program at Southern Connecticut State University, which included an internship in the Middletown Public Schools. He presented "School Renovations and State Statutes" at a Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents(CAPSS) workshop.

Prior to the realignment of Center School, which became a 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade school, Burrows was actively involved in early childhood education. He served as the administrative representative on the district Kindergarten committee. He also co-chaired several early childhood regional conferences.

Burrows served on the Board of Directors of CAS(Connecticut Association of Schools), which includes elementary, middle and high school divisions. He was an active member of the Elementary Professional Studies Committee, which created in-service learning opportunities for administrators throughout the state. He represented CAS on the Governor's Commission for Administrative Standards. He was one of three finalists for National Distinguished Principal for NAESP (National Association of Elementary School Principals) honored at a statewide conference two years ago.

EMSPAC (Elementary and Middle School Principals Association) became part of CAS several years ago. Burrows was active in EMSPAC and held almost every elected office: Secretary, Second Vice President, President Elect, and served as President in 1984-1985. From 1986 to 1987 he served as President of NRESPC (Northeast Regional Elementary School Principals' Council).

Burrows became Principal of Center School in 1985. Prior to that he was Assistant Principal of the Joel School in Clinton, Connecticut for seven years and Director of the Integrated Day Program. He was a school counselor in Glastonbury for several years. He was an elementary school teacher in South Windsor and had junior and senior high school teaching experience prior to that.

Burrows received his Bachelors Degree in Education from Gorham State Teachers College in Maine, his Masters Degree in School Guidance from Central Connecticut State University, and a Sixth Year Certificate in Education Administration from the University of Connecticut. He completed the Superintendent Certification program at Southern Connecticut State.

Burrows is looking forward to working with the faculty/staff in the Voluntown school system. He was impressed by the comprehensive superintendent search process as created by the Board of Education.

Burrows met with the faculty/staff and then took a tour of the Voluntown School on his first day as Superintendent. He was definitely impressed and especially enjoyed being introduced to the students.
