   Hugh C. Burroughs Hugh C. Burroughs, president of Independent Philanthropic Advisors, is an experienced and highly regarded veteran of the grantmaking world. His career includes senior staff positions at six national foundations, board service at a major community foundation, and directorships at eight national philanthropic infrastructure organizations.
   
   Most recently, Mr. Burroughs was President and CEO of The Berry Gordy Family Foundation in Los Angeles. Prior to that assignment, he served in leadership staff positions at the John Hay Whitney Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, and The David and Lucile Packard Foundation. As senior program officer at the Hewlett Foundation, he designed the Foundation's first Northern California grants program, and implemented that program in the fields of community economic development, youth employment, community foundation endowment and human services. As director of external affairs for the Packard Foundation, he managed Foundation relationships with government officials, philanthropic and nonprofit leaders, as well as the public at large, and supervised portions of its funding programs.
   
   Among infrastructure organizations, Mr. Burroughs has served on the Boards of The Council on Foundations, The Foundation Center, the Association of Black Foundation Executives, Hispanics in Philanthropy, Women in Philanthropy, Northern California Grantmakers and CIVICUS. He delivered the Eighth Annual James A. Joseph Lecture: "Changes in Philanthropy and The Role of Affinity Groups" in 1999. He has also co-edited More Minorities in Health, and contributed to Perspectives on Collaborative Funding.
   
   Mr. Burroughs earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics and education from Columbia University in New York City, and completed the certificate program of The Nonprofit Management Institute at Harvard University. He served as a member of The Grantmaking School Advisory Board.

   Hugh Burroughs has extensive experience in philanthropy highlighted by his elections to the Boards of twelve philanthropic organizations and appointments to the staffs of six national foundations. He has a demonstrated record of effective leadership in a variety on staff and Board positions that required indepth knowledge of philanthropy, high-level skill in managing people and creativity in problem solving. He was elected to the Boards of the Council on Foundations, The Foundation Center, the Peninsula Community Foundation and CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation. He was Board Chair of the Association of Black Foundation Executives, an early director of Women and Philanthropy as well as Northern California Grantmakers. He also served on the Boards of the Foundation for Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, Morehouse School of Medicine and Hispanics in Philanthropy. He was on the senior staffs of the Berry Gordy Family Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the John Hay Whitney Foundation. His expertise is in the fields of organized philanthropy, community development, communications and public affairs. Mr. Burroughs earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics and education from Columbia University in the City of New York. He also completed a certificate program in nonprofit management at Harvard University. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at The Grantmaking School of the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is also philanthropic counsel to several major grantmaking foundations.

   Hugh C. Burroughs, former director of external affairs for the Los Altos, California-based David and Lucile Packard Foundation, is the first president and CEO of The Berry Gordy Family Foundation in Los Angeles. Throughout his long career in philanthropy, Burroughs has served as a board member of the Council on Foundations and the Foundation Center, was an early chair of the Association of Black Foundation Executives, and is a trustee of the Peninsula Community Foundation. FN&C asked Burroughs about his new position:
   
   FN&C: Is The Berry Gordy Family Foundation a new foundation? Burroughs: Yes.
   ...
   Burroughs: The world looks much larger from the perspective of a small foundation than from that of a large foundation. The focus of a small foundation has to be more strategic in the use of its resources over time. Our challenge is using limited resources more effectively.
   
   FN&C: Do you foresee differences in working with a celebrity foundation? Burroughs: I see no difference. The family issues present at a large foundation like Packard are the same for the Berry Gordy, Hugh Burroughs and Allan Clyde families.
   
   FN&C: What about the differences in working in Northern and now Southern California? Burroughs: You don't have space for that.
