Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Burroughs
...
The Burroughs Family's relationship with Agassiz Village remains as strong today as it did when Harry Burroughs founded the camp in 1935. He actually started a program in Boston, similar to a Boys & Girls Club, called the Burroughs Newsboys Foundation, which offered all kinds of great activities to poor kids who couldn't afford those programs elsewhere. The idea was that every kid deserves the opportunity to learn, to grow, to experience the world. And the Newsboys Foundation building offered all this through arts and music classes, medical and health support, government and citizenship, sports and recreation, educational classes, and workshops on different career fields, so that the boys could prepare for the future. Agassiz Village is based on that model. But Mr. Burroughs did not just want to provide these opportunities ... to take advantage of them, appreciate them, and become a better person because of them. And that is what Agassiz Village is about to: working hard to make not just your own life better, but the lives of those around you; and to show appreciation for those that made a difference in your own life by giving back, by pushing yourself to be better.
The Unsung Hero Award was created to honor not just Harry Burroughs, but his entire family. Today, every child and grandchild of our founder still supports the camp in any way that he or she can.
...
Harry Burroughs quietly created an organization that has been changing people's lives for over 70 years; his family still quietly supports it today. We thank them for all that they do and look forward to the impact the next generation of Burroughs will have on Agassiz Village and the world. -
