BURROUGHS: I am not convinced that IAQ and energy are contradictory. The argument comes from the old ‘cost of ventilation' issues that came out of the early IAQ days of ‘tight building syndrome' and the resulting increased ventilation required by Standard 62-89. This issue pointed the finger at increased ventilation to solve indoor air quality problems with its related heat load on the mechanical systems. My position is that clean systems are energy-efficient systems. The fact that a "duct cleaning" industry even exists is an indictment of the cleanliness of our distribution systems. Anecdotal evidence has shown that for years fan-horsepower and refrigeration heat-exchange efficiencies are compromised by dirty coils. ARI and others, through ARTI's 21st Century Research, is currently underwriting research to verify and document the role of enhanced filtration efficiency and the related energy savings by keeping heat exchange coils clean. -
