George Burroughs Jr., president of the Mon Valley NAACP, said some young black adults don't realize their parents and grandparents were discriminated against and forced to attend different schools, live in separate areas and use alternate public facilities.

While he hopes the youth would rally if Martin Luther King Jr. Day was ignored, he said that he's not confident they would.

"They don't appreciate what they have today," he said. "Many think of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day off school or work."

While adult membership in Burroughs' chapter has remained steady, youth membership has been on the decline, he said, adding that the youth chapter was abandoned a few years ago when the chairman had to resign from the position.

"We're in the process of rebuilding the chapter," he said, adding that a few young adults have expressed interest in joining the NAACP. He also said he is working with people from California University of Pennsylvania to form a college chapter.

"We're trying to re-establish a connection with our youth," he said.

Both Anderson and Burroughs said the new leader needs to be able to communicate with young black Americans and draw them into the association.

The Rev. Robert Spence, former president of the Fayette County NAACP, said the black community needs a strong leader, "someone who is capable of reaching out to people, whether they are young, old or in between.

"The NAACP needs a very strong leader, someone who understands the issues and has the courage to do something about them," he said.

Most importantly, Spence said, the NAACP must choose someone who will address the problems young black Americans face today.

"The organization has lost touch with the youth," he said.

"Their concern was that the school district hadn't notified the parents, white and black, of what had transpired the weekend before," said George Burroughs, president of the NAACP's local branch.
