Velma Nuckols Burris Velma Nuckols Burris of 3000 Marion Road, Chatham, died of cancer on Saturday, April 5, 2003, at her residence with her family by her side. She was born on July 26, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of Kirby Chebar and Christine Oakes Nuckols, both are deceased. She was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church and previously a member for 30 years of Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg. She leaves behind her husband, Bob Burris of 45 years. She is also survived by her three sons, Mark Burris and his wife, Pam, and their two sons, Clay and Tye, all of Charlottesville; Stephen Burris and Patrick Day of Lynchburg; Brian Burris and his wife, Libby, and their children, Amy and Eric Haney, all of Triadelphia, W.Va. She also leaves her sister, Emma Jean Johnson and her husband, Billy, of Gretna; two brothers, J.T. Nuckols of Chatham, and Vaden Nuckols and his wife, Syble, of Lynchburg; and her sister-in-law, Sue Ritschel and her husband, Don, of Murchisen, Texas. Along with her five grandchildren, her extended family also includes five nephews, two nieces, three great-grand nephews and four great-grand nieces. Velma appreciated her family members, friends, plus those who did not really know her, but who kept her in their prayers and thoughts, and who sent so many cards, letters, books, visits, phones calls and food. While she could still communicate, these expressions of kindness and friendship sustained her throughout her illness. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church with the Rev. J. Kenneth Rogers officiating. In lieu of flowers, Velma and her family suggest memorial gifts be made to Chatham Presbyterian Church, 128 North Main St., Chatham, VA 24531, Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, 21206 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502, or the charity of your choice.
