Traditionally, hospitality workers have been thought of as primarily hotel, motel and restaurant employees, but that concept has been widened, said Don Burriesci, hired by the county tourism office to lead the morning seminar.
The convenience-store clerk who's asked for directions also is "an ambassador for the county," he said. With that initial contact, "people make an appraisal that it's a friendly place, a hospitable place, a welcoming place," said Burriesci, who teaches at Rappahannock Community College's Center for Business and Workforce Development. He's also president of Self-Development Training Associates in Richmond.
Why be nice to visitors and tourists? One of Burriesci's favorite sayings is, "Service to one another is the rent that we pay for the room we have on Earth."
Then there's the practical: When people think that it's a nice place to stop (and spend money), that translates to money for local businesses - as well as more tax revenue to help county residents, he said.
