Dr. Angeliki Burriel has taken a second, larger view, and has become convinced that much of the epidemic disease in the world today results from an ethically and economically ill society. This is the premise of her new book A 21ST CENTURY OF MAXIMUM CIVILIZATION, OR CHAOTIC-ANARCHY AND EPIDEMICS.
Dr. Burriel says epidemic disease "is not the result of a specific microbe or genetic makeup, but of many unsuspected social and political factors. We have permitted the division of society into more and less deserving people, condemning many to deadly infections. Wealth is analogous to good health, and epidemics have become an inseparable characteristic of the poor - 80% of the world's population."
Though the book was initially conceived as a thesis for a Master's degree of Science in International Relations, Dr. Burriel uses familiar, non-scientific language to explore the relationship of a variety of everyday events and actions to ill health. She associates the probable future to the known present and the politico-economic state, knitting together a variety of familiar conditions, often overlooked in the study of epidemic disease. "I believe all people on earth deserve and can have better health, through a more equitable division of wealth and opportunities. I feel I would be blessed if I managed to give people a small shock and reveal to them that the equilibrium of earth and society is in danger if we continue to look after 'self' and not 'us'."
Dr. Burriel was born to a poor family in a small Greek town, lacking the means to buy medical help until the state intervened. Minimum health insurance and accessible education allowed her to fight for her dreams. She studied Veterinary Medicine in Greece and travelled the world. Her Californian husband Daniel encouraged and economically supported her studies at the University of London for a Master's degree of Science in Animal Health, and Doctorate of Philosophy in Bacteriology. Her knowledge of diverse cultures and professional expertise were married in a Master of Science in International Relations. Today Dr. Burriel uses all her experience as an Assistant Professor of Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Thessaly, Greece.
