MARION -- Henry S. Burress, age 89 years, 10 months and 5 days, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2002, at 9:25 p.m. in the Veterans Administration Nursing Care Center of Marion.

Henry was united in marriage to Winifred Burkhart Jan. 1, 1938, in Benton.

Henry answered the call of his country by serving in the United States Army during World War II as a half-track Driver in the 14th Armored Division.
After his discharge from service, Henry worked in the shipyards at Evansville, Ind. until he returned back to Marion in 1944. He then began working as a heavy equipment operator for E.T. Simonds and Triangle Companies. He remained in construction for the next 25 years, working for about 15 years on the construction of Interstate 57, until his retirement from construction in 1987.
He served as Marion Street Superintendent from 1970 until 1979. Then in 1979, he was elected as Marion City Commissioner. He served eight years as commissioner, overseeing the Street Department, until his retirement came in 1987. Upon retirement he was quoted as saying, "I'm going to be active and I have a lot of catching up to do around the house."
In addition to his working career, Mr. Burress had served as a Board Member of the Marion Youth Center and also as a Park Board Member.
His church membership was with the Marion First Baptist Church for many years. Some of his other affiliations include the Marion Elks Club B.P.O.E.

During his lifetime, Henry was an avid fisherman and enjoyed visiting with all his friends. He touched many lives and assisted many through the years.
He is survived by his wife Winifred of Marion; daughter and son-in-law, Phoebe and Dr. Richard G. Bursua of Marion; two grandsons, Brian Matthew Bursua and his wife, Angela, of Seattle, Wash., and Adam Joel Bursua of Chicago; sister, Juanita Winters of Marion, several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Dr. James W. Burkhart of Muskogee, Okla. along with other family members and many friends.
His parents preceded him in death.
