1. Workgroup Technology Partners - Northern New England's Source for Advanced Information Technology

"College isn't what it used to be," says Steven Burrell, director of information technology, Plymouth State College.

"The price performance and scalability that Sun offered was significantly better," says Burrell. Based on Workgroup's recommendations, Plymouth State chose the Sun SF 4800 server to be the workhorse of the implementation. "The Partitioning/Domains, redundancy, and other features gave us mainframe capabilities on a midrange system," says Burrell. Workgroup tied the SF 4800 to a T3 storage area network (SAN). Plymouth also added two Sun V880s, a Sun V280, a SunBlade 1000 workstation, an L80 tape library, and two ES 250s.
"Workgroup was instrumental in facilitating an exchange of knowledge between us and Sun," says Burrell. "Workgroup hooked us up with the right people, and got us the attention we needed."
Once the decisions were made, Workgroup stayed on to help interface with the software vendors. "Workgroup was instrumental in advising us on optimal hardware configurations. They helped us make better decisions, and communicate with all of the vendors involved," says Burrell.
With the systems in place, Burrell is pleased with the performance. "We have been very satisfied with the reliability and stability," says Burrell. "We are providing services to a community of users 24 by seven, so we need systems that are there for us and don't require a lot of maintenance and attention."
Beyond the dependability of the systems, Burrell feels that Plymouth State's new technology has reengineered the institution. "We had silos of functionality like admissions and accounts receivable, but now we can think comprehensively. We can now organize ourselves from the student point of view," says Burrell.
Rather than being tied up with a lot of standard transactions, administrators can spend time helping students and their parents with more significant issues. "We moved from technology conceived in the 1970s to a platform where we can implement e-commerce and web-enabled processes," says Burrell. "We can extend our services to the campus through these advanced technologies to engage our customer-the student-their parents, and the alumni from a much broader perspective."
Through it all, Burrell has relied on Workgroup Technology Partners. "Our relationship with Workgroup allowed us to focus on our community of users rather than the technical details," says Burrell. "Workgroup has been phenomenal - they have been a keystone to the whole project."
Because of the success of the project, Burrell is counting on Workgroup to help with future needs. "We have more vendors coming in, and Workgroup will be on site with us to consult on hardware and software configurations," says Burrell. -
