   BG Scholarships offer the opportunity to the recipients to build towards the pinnacle of the sport, the Olympic Games, by placing each athlete under special ITU supervision to support progressive development to elite standards with the ultimate goal being participation at an Olympic level.
   
   "Each of the athletes selected to receive the 2008 BG Scholarship has shown the potential to achieve at the highest level in the sport and we look forward to see their progress through the year as part of the BG Scholarship Programme," said Burrell.

   According to Libby Burrell, director of the ITU's development program, the organization's agreement with BG Group has the potential to significantly impact the future of triathlon.
   
   "It gives ITU the opportunity and financial and human resources to take the sport around the world and fulfill their development responsibilities," says Burrell, former team coach for U.S.A. Triathlon."They're so many possibilities-the world is really our oyster."
   
   BG Group, headquartered in Reading, England, has 5,400 employees in 20 countries around the world, including India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Egypt.Founded in 2000, the publicly traded natural energy company has seen exponential growth over the past six years and enjoys a market capitalization of over 20 billion euros.
   
   "BG has about 20 asset areas located in key regions for us in parts of the world we haven't developed yet," says Burrell."Using their human resources, we can buddy off BG to bring in our programs.You're going to see athletes emerging on the scene from countries we haven't seen before, programs getting stronger, and the lure into the Olympic sport is going to get bigger and bolder."
   
   Burrell adds that the ITU will also leverage the partnership to strengthen existing triathlon programs, adding races in countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy.
