The revenue projections - while substantial to the two counties - may be high, acknowledged Steve Burr in a presentation before the legislative Tourism Task Force which met Monday at the Capitol.Burr, director of the Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University, said a final report is expected to be completed in August. The numbers are based on interviews with 2,000 visitors from March to October of last year.It is the first-ever survey of tourist dollars generated from the southern Utah monument.According to the study, about 14.1 percent of the visitors are from Utah, 62.9 percent are from out of state and 23 percent from other countries. The survey asked visitors how much they spent and that number was then multiplied by the total number of visitors.Based on that formula, Utahns spent about ,8.6 million while visiting the monument, out-of-state visitors spent about ,54.7 million and international visitors spent about ,25 million, Burr told legislators.

Burr said his projections are based on the estimated number of visitors provided by the Bureau of Land Management, which manages the monument. Unlike Bryce Canyon, which has a single access road, visitors may choose several roads to visit the Grand Staircase, Burr said.
