"Doc K," as his students and colleagues affectionately called him was born in the Williamsburg Brooklyn on April 16, 1905, son of Julian T.W. and Lizbeth Burr (Gaylor). He attended Yale University and received his BA in 1927 (Phi Beta Kappa), Mus. B. in 1928 and Ph.D. (in Music and English) in 1932. He graduated from Poly Prep Country Day School in 1923.

In 1982, Doc K retired as head of the English Department of Poly Prep after 50 years of teaching. However, he was often quoted as saying that "teaching is only half my life, music is my antidote." Thus continuing his dual interests on music and teaching, he also worked as a music critic for the New Haven Journal Courier (Conn.) (1929-38), Brooklyn Eagle (1937-46), The Journal American and then The World Journal-Tribune (1946-67). He also served as a music correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor (1945-1969) and contributed articles to Musical American and Opera News. For many years he was a frequent lecturer on music for the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
