For kids, the most common causes of summer injuries include bicycles, trampolines, pools, baseball and sports activities, and sliding down embankments, according to David Burnside, MD, medical director of Alton Memorial Hospital's Emergency Department. He says many injuries also happen when children are on riding lawn mowers or ATVs.
"I shudder when I see kids on mowers or ATVs even if they're with an adult," he says.

Dr. Burnside is board certified in pediatric medicine and two other physicians have dual certification that includes pediatrics.
Grown Ups Get Hurt Too Adults have their fair share of summer injuries, too. "Our ER is especially busy in the summer partly because the Alton area has so much recreational and outdoor activity during the season," says Dr. Burnside.
He points out that people improperly using lawn mowers, weekend warriors playing sports, bicyclists with no helmets, and swimmers who dive head first into pools or rivers represent a significant amount of the injuries seen in the emergency room.
"The good news is we offer exceptionally good turnaround times in our emergency room with a section of it staffed with family practice physicians for faster attention," says Dr. Burnside. -
