HEAD OF COACHING REPTON BOYS CLUB
Born in Bridgend South Wales, Tony Came to London at the age of six and started boxing for the Repton when he was 14 years old. He took on the position of coach for the Repton in 1967 when he was just 27 years old and has excelled in the position ever since, bringing out the best in such greats as Les Stuart, Maurice Hope, and John H Stracey, to name but a few World Champions. Tony was awarded the Mussabini Medal for coaching excellence in 2000. -

In a star-studded ceremony at the Cafe Royal on Thursday , Repton Boxing Club coach Tony Burns was awarded the Mussabini medal by the National Coaching Foundation.

Burns , who is based at the Repton in Bethnal Green , has coached nine boxers to Olympic standard , including gold medallist Harrison. Between them , his boxers have won 48 gold medals around the world and 84 of his boxers have competed for Great Britain. Five world beaters His citation from the NCF read : With a coaching career that has spanned over 30 years , Tony has the winning combination to get his boxers the right results , with five of his boxers going on to win world professional titles.. And in a message sent from New York , Harrison said : Tony is a little man but he makes big men quake in their boots.. Burns , who was accompanied to the event by his wife Barbara , received a standing ovation when he was presented with his medal. He will now join the NCF's coaching Hall of Fame.
