Businesses without the technological resources to respond promptly are even less likely to do so with unsolicited résumés, human resource experts said.
A 1999 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found that about 36 percent of companies either don't respond to or discard unsolicited résumés.
Experts advise job seekers to avoid sending résumés en masse. Their advice: Applicants should include a cover letter, and think carefully about the company, their own qualifications and whether they would be a good fit.
