Steven co-founded Burns + Beyerl Architects in 1993 with the belief that a small firm would provide the finest atmosphere for quality, attentive architecture.
Steve received his Bachelor of Fine Art, Cum Laude degree from Syracuse University in 1980 and a Master of Architecture degree with Distinction in Design, from Harvard University in 1986. Steven promptly moved to Chicago, where he began a significant career with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).
At SOM, Steve was swiftly promoted to Project Architect and Associate in 1988 where he worked on major international projects in London, Korea and Japan. In 1989, Steven moved to the London office of SOM where he was responsible for the design and construction of three office buildings in Stockley Park.
In early 1992, Steven moved to Berlin, Germany to establish a permanent office for SOM. There, Steve designed a 32 story office building situated along the prominent Frankfurter Allee. In June of 1993, Steven and his wife Victoria returned to Chicago where he established Burns + Beyerl Architects in advance of the birth of their first child.
Today, Steven and Victoria have two children, Jasper and Sophie. In 1997, Steven co-founded BBA/Build, LLC, a design/build company which allows Burns + Beyerl Architects to provide both design and construction services to its growing array of demanding clients.
Steven has served as a design critic at the University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and the Boston Architectural Center. He has also exhibited work and lectured at Judson College and The Chicago Architectural Club. Steven has received awards from the American Institute of Architects, The Winnetka Society for Historic Preservation, McGraw-Edison Halo Lighting Design Award of Excellence and a Ford Foundation Grant. In 2001, Steven won an international design competition for an exclusive residential community with 700 homes in Beijing, China.
Steve is a member of the Chicago Software Association and the FileMaker Solutions Alliance. He is also the founder of Orange Loft, developers of ArchiOffice® the premier office and project management software designed specifically for architectural firms. -
