Since June 12, Walkerton's entire water system began undergoing what the Ontario Clean Water Agency calls Ontario's largest municipal water supply disinfection program. Explaining the decision June 8, Steve Burns, a member of the team administering the procedure, said, In order to restore clean and safe drinking water to our community, we have decided to embark on this very aggressive and thorough disinfection program.. The town has been undergoing door-to-door disinfection--all the way down to the replacement of showerheads, donated by a Canadian company. Some water mains will be replaced, while other parts of the system are being flushed and wiped down. Teams were dispatched this week to test water supplies in homes and businesses around the community. Samples will be drawn from kitchen sinks and office water fountains to test the water's potability.
