Music teacher Jonathan Burgess, who teaches at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Cobham, was one of 10 teachers shortlisted for the award, now in its eighth year and finished runner-up.

Mr Burgess, who plays violin, has taught at the school for six years.

He leads four orchestras and four choirs and also takes the pupils on an international tour each year.

The next excursion â€" for 70 pupils â€" is to Venice in May next year and will include a performance at St Mark's Basilica.

Mr Burgess said: "There is no exclusion in the department."Everyone is welcome to join one of the many groups, which is what the parents really like and the girls do too.

"I have support from all areas of the school and a brilliant team of visiting music teachers who support me and encourage the girls."

As a finalist Mr Burgess won a computer and music notation software for the school.

Passing on his love of music has won Jonathan Burgess, a teacher at Notre Dame preparatory school in Cobham, a silver award in Classic FM's music teacher of the year awards.

Mr Burgess beat more than 1,000 other entries with the extraordinary transformation of the school's music department during his six years as its head.

The department was praised as "outstanding" in the 2007 Independent Schools Inspectorate's report.

Described by parents as a "unique" teacher with a wonderful understanding of children, Mr Burgess has instilled a love of music in his pupils, as well as engineering a rise in the levels of singing and playing instruments at the school.

Mr Burgess has also organised concerts, soir,es, foreign trips and workshops.

Notre Dame's headteacher David Plummer said: "We are delighted Mr Burgess has been given the recognition he deserves."

Jonathan Burgess began his musical training with the Australian Boys Choir, in Melbourne Australia.It was here that he was introduced to the Kodaly method of musicianship training.

In recent years he has studied in Hungary at the Estergom Summer Music School, and with the Kodály Institute of Britain where he gained his advanced diploma in Kodaly Musicianship.

Jonathan is Director of Music at Notre Dame Preparatory School, Cobham, Surrey, where he directs the choirs and orchestras, as well as teaching a Kodaly programme throughout the school.

He also performs regularly as a voilinist and violist in the All Souls Orchestra and various other ensembles.

Jonathan served as a BKA Trustee from September 2003 - 4, and continues to be involved with the management in the Communications subcommittee as Press Officer.
