Race director, John Burgess, felt really bad about the wrong turn and immediately apologized for the error.
    ...
John Burgess was more than gracious in his apology and he encouraged all runners to come back next year.He didn't dodge or bob or weave ... he said he was sorry and he promised do his best to make sure that this doesn't happen again.I AGREE!!!Now I've been to enough races to understand that the buck stops with the race director, but in this case, there was absolutely nothing John could do about the mix-up.I sincerely hope that all of us will continue to support this race because it is for a very worthy cause.I even asked John this morning if he had next year's entry forms ready ... hey, this is the fastest 5K I've had since 1992 ...
    ...
John, his sponsors, and the boys and girls who are just beginning to enjoy one of the most rewarding sports in our land, running, deserve another chance.

Captain Jon Burgess is an eight-year veteran with the department. He was in the first-ever intern class in 1994.Graduating in Academy Class 95-2, Burgess considers this program to be "an excellent opportunity."At age 19, when the entry age was 18 and no college units were required, Burgess entered the program after hearing about it while taking a fire science class at Consumes River College in Sacramento. He graduated with associate's degrees in fire science and paramedicine.

Born and reared in Sacramento, Burgess wanted to work in his hometown, yet he never really considered being a paramedic initially."I probably wouldn't have paid to go to paramedic school due to the financial aspect."

Burgess is the engine captain at Station 17, which is also home to Medic 17, where interns can ride along. He understands what it is to be an intern and where he can help.Says Burgess, "I want them to succeed."

In an age of ever-increasing "free agency," where medics leave one department for another, the interns continue to be steadfast in their commitment to the department that gave them the opportunity of a lifetime. As the intern program approaches its 10-year anniversary, only one person has resigned after successfully completing the program and working on-line as a firefighter/paramedic."I have a sense of loyalty to the department," Burgess acknowledges, a feeling nearly all the former interns share.

Burgess is active in the department. He recently was a drill instructor at the Fire Academy, continues to be licensed as a paramedic, is a physical fitness coordinator for the fitness program, and performs community outreach for the department through public education. This a person from whom we all-especially future interns-can learn.

    Entrance Requirements Ensure Retention

The retention rate is extremely high, as is the camaraderie enjoyed by the interns.JoAnn Jacobson-Wham, who is also a paramedic instructor for the intern program through American River College (ARC-the intern program works closely with this local community college, which has an established paramedic program), was an intern for class year 1998 and was a fire recruit in Academy Class 00-1.She and others from her class continue to meet monthly for a social night, catching up on one another's lives.
