SCOTTS VALLEY - Every week on Monday and Tuesday, Ken Bunter sits down at his computer with a file of sports statistics, ready to tabulate the highest scorers in a game that never happened.
Bunter and his brother-in-law, Phil Dein of Fremont, run HeySportsFans, a fantasy sports contest business they started five years ago with about 50 members.
...
"And 40 percent of those were probably giveaways to friends," joked Bunter.
That number, no longer made up of friends but of sports fans nationwide and in Canada, has grown to more than 400.
In the world of fantasy sports, a participant "owns" a team of actual sports players, creating a team made up of the players' various positions.Based on their players' performance in real games, fantasy game participants earn points - a certain amount for a touchdown pass, a certain amount for hitting a double, and so on - and compete with other people doing the same thing.
"At its essence, fantasy sports is stat-driven," said Bunter.

Football is the most popular fantasy sport, according to Bunter and Dein, but HeySportsFans offers fantasy basketball and baseball games, in addition to two variations on football.
...
Bunter said last year the business earned $31,000.This year, he expects it to top $40,000.
The partners plan to use the business more as a source of extra income and something fun to do.Bunter, a Santa Cruz native, owns Advanced Blind & Shade Service in Soquel, while Dein is a professional Web designer.
...
As a side job in a growing industry, though, Bunter and Dein are content to grow slowly and enjoy the ride.
