Whether it is the thickness of a specific gauge of metal or the finding the right k-factor to calculate the flat pattern, we have brought them all together in one place," says Joe Bucalo, president of Sheet Metal Guy, LLC.

I just want to share my sheet metal knowledge with sheet metal people who need to get their job done," says Joe Bucalo, president of Sheet Metal Guy, LLC."Hopefully the new blog will allow me to address common questions and concerns that I have heard over the years."

The Sheet Metal Guy Blog is hosted by Mr. Bucalo, the founder and President of Sheet Metal Guy, LLC.He has over 30 years experience in the sheet metal fabrication industry, working with and developing software products to change the manufacturing world. When CAD was just beginning on the PC, Mr. Bucalo played a major role in the development of ProFold, the first truly automatic 3D sheet metal unfolding program for press brake parts. When most people were using a wall chart of bend deductions, Mr. Bucalo was promoting the use of the k-factor for more accurate flat patterns.Mr. Bucalo later paved the way for graphics based sheet metal CAM when he introduced ProFab, which allows the direct transfer of geometry from CAD to CAM.Mr. Bucalo continues to work with sheet metal fabricators to solve their design and manufacturing problems. He has a thorough knowledge of the most popular CAD programs and understands the issues faced by sheet metal fabricators.

To manufacture parts, job shops typically first accept native CAD files from outside sources, says Joe Bucalo, president of SheetMetalGuy.com.Although the shop CNC programmer is just that , a programmer, not a designer , he must constantly take the 2D or 3D data (often nothing but garbage) and somehow turn it into the correct geometry for manufacturing. The geometry is then passed to a CAM system.

The underlying problem for sheet-metal parts, says Bucalo, is that most CAD designers have never actually manufactured such parts and don't know the intricacies of sheet-metal design and manufacturing.

One software issue is CAD system compatibility, according to Mike Zordan, vice president of sales for Metalsoft Inc., and Applied Production President Joe Bucalo.
    ...
Many hours are lost converting files and checking the CAD model," explained Bucalo.

Several companies said they were focusing on compatibility issues. Bucalo said that although his company is in the CAM business and not the CAD industry, it works with many of the CAD programs and often assists customers in converting files. "Our support staff uses e-mail to receive the customer's file, translate it to the required format, and e-mail it back to the customer," he explained.
    ...
Software will begin to follow the same path," said Bucalo.
