    Maurice Bucagu, MD, is Head of Department of Reproductive Health at the National University of Rwanda's School of Public Health. Dr. Bucagu's areas of specialization are Obstetrics & Gynecology, Reproductive Health and Population. Over the last twelve years, Dr. Bucagu has worked as a trainer of physicians at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels (Obstetrics & Gynecology; Reproductive Health). He served as Director of the National Population Office from 1994 to 2001. In 2002, he joined the pioneering faculty at the newly founded School of Public Health. Currently, Dr. Bucagu teaches courses in Demography, Quality Assurance, Reproductive Health, and Burden of Disease at the School of Public Health as well as courses in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the National University of Rwanda Faculty of Medicine. Dr Bucagu has participated in several studies at the national and international levels, including the Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (2000). He has also conducted studies on health financing (mutual health insurance; economic impact of malaria), human resource for health, quality of obstetric care, and client satisfaction following Voluntary Counseling and Testing for HIV. Dr Bucagu served as team leader for two project proposals approved by the Global Fund Aids Tuberculosis & Malaria (GFATM): (i) Assuring access to quality care: The missing link to combat AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in Rwanda (2006-2010, round 5) and (ii) Scaling Up Access to HIV/AIDS Services - With Focus On Prevention in Rwanda (2007 - 2011, round 6). The two projects have been approved by GFATM for a total fund of over US $ 92 million.

    Special research interests for Dr Bucagu include (i) Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV in Rwanda; (ii) Infant mortality and (iii) maternal mortality. Dr. Bucagu is currently PhD candidate in Public Health (Maternal & Child Health) at ‘Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium'.
