THE USED ENGINEER, BOB BRYAR, CHOOSES EVOLUTION WIRED MICS
...
Front-of-house engineer, Bob Bryar, worked with The Used earlier this year on some shows with blink-182, where he discovered that Sennheiser's Evolution Series of wired microphones are well suited to the band's own particular brand of aggressive emo.
...
Bryar relates that he switched his microphone affiliation after a less than satisfactory relationship with another manufacturer. Now, he says, he's so happy with the Evolution Series mics that he even went out and recently bought more.
...
Bob Bryar, currently FOH engineer for The Used depends on Evolution wired mics for vocals and instruments.
McCracken's voice presents a bit of a challenge, Bryar continues."I'm slipping back and forth between the Sennheiser E835 and the E935 for him. He's got more of a nasally voice and I think the 835 is working better for him.And he's all over the place with that mic, but he can go anywhere because the rejection is really good."
Bryar, who has also worked with Pressure 4-5, Thrice, My Chemical Romance, Story of the Year, and H2O, is also very pleased with the sounds that he's been getting from the drums with the Evolution Series."I'm using the E903 on the hi-hat.
...
It's a lot cleaner sounding to me." Bryar adds, "I've done live recordings with him that way and it sounds great."
Although he typically pairs the E602 kick drum mic with another brand of mic, he notes, "I've done some shows where we were in a hurry and I've only used that mic, and after a little EQ you can get the 602 to sound awesome.
...
Compared to his previous tom mics, the E604s "just have a bigger body to them," observes Bryar."These have a bigger body and with less EQ you can make them sound a lot better than those other mics."
"Completing the backline setup," he says, "I usually run an E609 Silver and a 903 per side, per guitar player. The E609 Silvers have been working well on the guitars. It's really punchy sounding.
