Wilshire member Linda Bryant often encouraged her to participate in the Sanctuary Choir, where she now sings alto.

"The difference at Wilshire," she said, was that "I was asked to do more things in the first six months than ever at St. John's," she said. A member of Horizons Class, she has volunteered with Healing Hands, serves on the New Member Committee and is a member of Julie Merritt's lay mentoring group.

I AM WILSHIRE - LINDA BRYANT

In stitchesLinda Bryant is well known for her heartfelt tears, but people may not be aware of her talents as a seamstress. She has a bachelor's degree in fashion design from the University of Oklahoma and can make her own patterns. "My degree came in handy," she said."I made most of my daughter Heather's clothes, especially formals for dances" as well as costumes for her high school drill team and sorority shows in college. "I copied styles I saw on soap operas on TV," Bryant said."I wasn't a cutting-edge designer, but I'm a good copier."She excels at the engineering side, the structure and construction of garments rather than flair. "I also made christening gowns for my son's and daughter's family," she added, noting she also enjoys counted cross-stitch, knitting and needlepoint.Bryant first became aware of her future husband, Jerry, when he was in fourth grade and she was in the third."His sister had just gotten married, and he'd learned the Wedding March for her wedding. When he played it in a talent show at school, I decided he was going to play at my wedding," but it turns out "he played a different role," she laughed. They also knew each other at First Baptist Church of Norman, Okla., their hometown. The Bryants began dating when they were students at OU, and they married after he graduated. After she graduated, they lived for a year in Tulsa, where he worked for an oil company. The next year, they moved to St. Louis, where he was in graduate school at Washington University and she worked as assistant manager in the boys' department of a department store. In 1967, the Bryants moved to Dallas. He began as an administrative resident at Baylor University Medical Center, and she spent a year as a selling-cost controller at Titche-Goettinger. For 30 years, Bryant has worked in the apparel and furniture markets at the Apparel Mart and World Trade Center."I'm now down to just lamps," she said. She also worked for five years at Needlework Patio in Snider Plaza. After visiting two other Baptist churches, the Bryants joined Wilshire the second Sunday they attended in 1967."It just felt like home," she said. They were especially impressed that two couples visited them the night after they first attended. "It's been interesting to watch other churches not be able to figure out who they are," Bryant said."George has handled our church so well as we have worked together to be who we are." Bryant loves Wilshire's worship and music style and the Bible study on Wednesday night. She regrets having to leave early for Sanctuary Choir, where she sings soprano and is now doing a second stint on the social committee. For years, she was the "snow cone lady" for Vacation Bible School. She is now the "hymn listening lady" for first- and second-graders who participate in the hymn memorization program on Wednesday nights.Bryant has served two terms on the Building and Grounds Committee and is currently a member of the Interior Design Committee. She is one of the driving forces behind keeping Wilshire's décor in tune with its Williamsburg-style architecture. She has served in a variety of roles through the years at Wilshire."During the 1970s and '80s, Jerry and I were directors of the young married Sunday School department," she said. This large, active department of mostly newlyweds included many of Wilshire's current leaders. A founding member of Whosoever Wilshire Class in the early 1990s, Bryant has served on the social committee."For the last several years, Jerry and I have been outreach leaders," she added. This year she helped Music Associate Sarah Stafford with Wilshire's first MusiCamp. "The most amazing thing happened the night of the performance," she recalled.

It was also another good opportunity for Bryant to be moved to tears.
