Renee Bryant, the director of Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries, said that last year the group spent $10,000 on its energy assistance program to help 220 families.

"Basically, we're going to piecemeal it and see if we can find some extra money," Bryant said.

Renee Bryant, director of Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries, which has a heating-assistance program, said additional money from the city would "help immensely."

Last year, her agency had $10,000 available for a heating-assistance program that starts in January and is normally out of money by mid-February.

"Any time you have families living paycheck to paycheck, anything you get helps," Bryant said.
