"Lots of marketers are using CDs to extend a brand and to offer more information to a consumer," said Ed Bruno, president of eTagz, which positions its tags as a kind of a digital "look-what-I-got-in-my-cereal box!"consumer bonus."But with these hangtags, we can offer consumers something they really value," he said, noting the tags average a 78 percent load rate, "and while that may seem really high, these tend to be highly targeted promotions, with consumers factoring the discs into the purchase decision."

For am/pm, with 950 stores throughout the western U.S., the promotion is timed for rollout around the NCAA playoffs, and will feature large cardboard cutouts of the animated basketball players.Worldwide, FreeStyle Street Basketball attracts about 32 million players a month, Bruno told Marketing Daily.

Digitrends.net - TheDial Provides a New Tracking Tool - [Cached Version]
Published on: 8/23/2001    Last Visited: 6/7/2002

TheDial's vice president of sales, Ed Bruno, says the development of a measurement system for streaming media has been a long time coming."We've been looking for a standard for a long time," says Bruno."Advertisers kept coming back to us asking us what our system for verification was."

The ad verification system works on a system of "pings," similar to the way in which traditional radar works. Each stream is tracked and every time an advertisement plays, a ping is sent to the ad agency to record the activity.Bruno says the tool delivers an unprecedented amount of information in regard to spending on streaming advertisements.

"It's the ultimate in tracking ROI.It allows us to know how many spots to fire," says Bruno."Arbitron, for example, is only guessing how many people are listening to something on the radio at any particular time. Here, I can empirically calculate how many times an ad is heard."

While the exact process behind the technology is being guarded closely, the concept is rather simple. The ping is attached to the ad itself as a code. When the ad is served, it sends the packet of code back up the pipe.
    ...
Bruno says both Hewlett-Packard and ubid have already taken advantage of the tracking system and more advertisers are looking in to using it.The lowest CPM is $35, but Bruno adds that as the ads require more targeting, the price goes up accordingly.

TheDial already syndicates its content and is hoping it can work out a similar arrangement with its new tool."We're definitely looking at doing something like licensing our technology," says Bruno."Maybe creating something like an ASP."

The ping could serve as a model for emerging technologies like broadband and wireless that are still in need of new measurement tools. And while some ray of light will eventually break through the dot-com gloom, there's no immediate end to the problems in sight. The ping technology delivers more accountability to a system in desperate need of fiscal responsibility.Precise and detailed reports can help drive ROI effectively.

The ping technology may also help the compilation of information on users of streaming content on the Web, a group that's rapidly developing.
